Pre-War Profession: Farm worker, graduated West Point 1849, Seminole war, survey work, instructor in artillery tactics at West Point, traveled on duty in Europe
War Service: 1861 chief quartermaster to Nathaniel Lyon, McClellan's
staff in West Virginia, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded
defenses of Harper's Ferry – Medal of Honor, had various commands, engaged
in the enlistment and organization of Black soldiers, served in the Freedmen's Bureau.
Post War: Army service in quartermasters department, retired 1888.
