War Service: 1861 Capt. in 4th US Infantry, Lt. Col., commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/V Corps in Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers - not confirmed by the Senate because of his association with Fitz John Porter, commanded defences at Fort Delaware, Col. of 1st US Infantry.

Post War:  Army service, commanded Department of Louisiana, retired 1870
