War Service: May 1861 organised 9th Ohio - Col., served in West Virginia,
Carnifax Ferry, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/Army of the Ohio at Mill Springs
(w), March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, advance on Corinth,
mortally wounded in a skirmish in Tennessee.
Post War: He was shot in a skirmish with the 4th Alabama Cavalry near Huntsville, Alabama in 1862. In agony from a mortal wound in the intestines, he was taken to a nearby house, where he died within 24 hours.
