War Service: July 1861 Col. of 19th Indiana, Groveton (w), October 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded the Iron Brigade (4th Bde/1st Divn/I Corps) at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (w), commanded posts in Illinois and Kentucky.
