Pre-War Profession: Court clerk, flour inspector, newspaper editor, businessman

War Service: April 1861 Lt. Col. of 1st Minnesota, First Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, served in Shenandoah Valley, Seven Pines, Seven Days, August 1862 Col. in 7th Minnesota, fought the Sioux in Minnesota, October 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, resigned January 1864.

Post War: Governor of Minnesota, railroad employee.
