Pre-War Profession: Lawyer, county attorney, state attorney general for Iowa.

War Service: October 1862 Col. of 33rd Iowa, entire service took place in Missouri and Arkansas, opened Yazoo Pass for navigation, commanded 2nd Bde/13th Divn/XIII Corps at Helena, August 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Jenkins' Ferry (mw).

Post War: On April 30, 1864 at Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, he was mortally wounded and then was returned to his home state of Iowa. He died at Oskaloosa, Iowa, July 6, 1864
