Divn at Charleston Harbor, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/IX Corps at South
Mountain, Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers -
appointment expired, commanded regiment at Fredericksburg, reappointed Brig.
Gen. of Volunteers March 1863, command 1st Divn/IX Corps in Vicksburg

Post War: Welsh contracted a malarial fever during this campaign, from which he died in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 14, 1863
