service against Seminoles, garrison duty and instructor at West Point,
Mexican war, duties in the West and duty again against Seminoles.
War Service: May 1861 Maj. 5th US Artillery, September 1861
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 4th Bde in North Carolina
expedition, commanded Fort Hatteras, commanded 2nd Bde at New Orleans,
attacked by Confederates trying to recapture Baton Rouge (mw).
Post War: In the Battle of Baton Rouge, Williams was killed by a gunshot wound to his chest on August 5, 1862, while leading what proved to be the successful defense of the city.
