War Service: April 1861 Col. of 13th Pennsylvania (later designated 102nd Pennsylvania), garrison duty on Potomac line, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines (w), Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Antietam, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Fredericksburg, directed 1st Bde/3rd Divn/I Corps at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, draft duties in Portland, court-martialed at Culpepper VA, restored to duty in command of District of Monongahela, resigned December 1864.
