Pre-War Profession: Civil engineer, realtor.

War Service: 1861 recruited a company of 11th Illinois - Capt., Maj., Lt. Col., Charleston, MO (w), Fort Donelson (w), Col., Shiloh (w), June 1862, Chief of Staff to McClernand and Inspector General of Army of Tennessee, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/6th Divn/XVII Corps at Vicksburg, Sabine Cross Roads (w), commanded XVI Corps at Atlanta, commanded XVII Corps in pursuit of Hood

Post War: His wounds at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads, Louisiana were so severe that he was evacuated to Chicago for treatment. He was awarded a brevet promotion to major general on September 1, 1864 and died a few weeks later.
