McClernand and Inspector General of Army of Tennessee, November 1862 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/6th Divn/XVII Corps at Vicksburg,
Sabine Cross Roads (w), commanded XVI Corps at Atlanta, commanded XVII
Corps in pursuit of Hood
Post War: His wounds at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads, Louisiana were so severe that he was evacuated to Chicago for treatment. He was awarded a brevet promotion to major general on September 1, 1864 and died a few weeks later.
