Pre-War Profession: Irish independence activist, convict in Tasmania,
arrived in US 1852, lawyer, lecturer, political leader for Irish immigrants.
War Service: 1861 organised a company in the 69th New York Militia - Maj.,
First Bull Run, organised the Irish Brigade in New York, February 1862 appointed Brig.
Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/II Corps at Yorktown, Seven Pines,
Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, resigned May
1863 (not accepted), commanded various positions in the West, commanded a Provisional
Division in the Carolinas campaign.
Post War: Territorial secretary for Montana
