of Volunteers, Chancellorsville, commanded 2nd Divn/XII Corps at Gettysburg,
commanded 2nd Bde/1st Divn/XX Corps in Atlanta campaign, commanded 2nd
Divn/XIII Corps at Franklin, Carolinas campaign, commanded 1st Divn/Provisional
Corps in closing scenes of the war.
Post War: Army service, Reconstruction duty, Indian fighter,
superintendent of West Point, retired 1897.
