Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 6th Divn at Shiloh, advance on Corinth, commanded 6th Divn/II Corps at Perryville, Stone's River (w), commanded 1st Divn/XXI Corps in Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga, commanded 3rd Divn/IV Corps at Missionary Ridge, Knoxville, Atlanta campaign, Lovejoy Station (w), commanded IV Corps at Nashville, January 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers

Post War: Army service, retired 1868, member of West Point Board of Visitors.
