War Service: January 1861 Capt. in 2nd US Infantry, May 1861 Brig.
Gen. of Missouri Volunteers, Wilson's Creek (w), January 1862 Col. of 52nd
Illinois, Fort Donelson, commanded a brigade in W H L Wallace's division at
Shiloh, battle of Corinth, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers,
garrison duty in Tennessee and Mississippi, commanded 2nd Divn/XVI Corps
in Atlanta campaign, court martialled for conduct unbecoming an officer but
acquitted, dismissed for being absent without leave in 1865 but later reinstated.
Post War: Army service, led a group of Irish-Americans in
an invasion of Canada, retired 1870.
