Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/4th Divn/XIX Corps at Port Hudson, Red River campaign, commanded 1st Divn/XIX Corps in Shenandoah Valley campaign, Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek, arrested for defamatory statements but no action taken.
