Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1843 (1st in his class),
engineer duty, served in Kearny's exploration of the Rockies, Mexican war,
supervised construction in Washington.
War Service: May 1861 Col. of 12th US Infantry, May 1861 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn at First Bull Run,
commanded a division in Washington defences, commanded VI Corps in
Peninsula campaign, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, South
Mountain, Antietam, commanded Left Grand Divn at Fredericksburg,
commanded XIX Corps in Red River campaign (w).
Post War: Businessman, politician, US commissioner
general to the 1888 Paris Exposition
