1863 Col., Atlanta campaign, March to the Sea, commanded 1st Bde/1st
Divn/XV Corps in Carolina campaign, May 1865 appointed Brig.
Gen. of Volunteers.
Post War: U.S. circuit court judge of Georgia and Gulf
States, associate justice of U.S. Supreme Court.
