Canadian border, Mexican war, Seminole war, duty in Kansas.
War Service: 1861 Maj. in 5th US Artillery, Fort Pickens,
chief of artillery at First Bull Run, August 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of
Volunteers, organized the ordnance of the Army of the Potomac, Peninsula
campaign, Seven Days, asked to be given duty elsewhere, supervised defenses
of Washington, chief of artillery for Sherman in Atlanta campaign, Franklin
and Nashville campaign, Carolinas campaign.
Post War: Army service in artillery, frontier duty, historian.
