War Service: 1861 refused to surrender his garrison in Texas, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/1st Divn/II Corps in Peninsula campaign, Seven Days, commanded 3rd Divn/II Corps at Antietam, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, commanded Dist. of Harper's Ferry, commanded III Corps at Mine Run, relieved of command in May 1864, served on military boards
