War Service: April 1861 commissioned 2nd Lt. in 3rd US Infantry , 1st Lt., Peninsula campaign, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, April 1863 Col. of 15th New Jersey, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Cold Harbor and in the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Cedar Creek, Petersburg, Appomattox campaign, June 1865 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: Army service in the infantry, retired 1896
