Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1856, frontier service
with the dragoons, Utah expedition.
War Service: 1861 Capt. in 6th Cavalry in Washington defenses, Peninsula
campaign, Maryland campaign, Col. of 5th Kentucky Cavalry, pursued Morgan's
raiders, commanded a brigade and division in the Knoxville campaign, October
1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Knoxville (mw).
Post War: On November 18, 1863, Sanders was shot in the side and mortally wounded by a sharpshooter of the forces under the command of Confederate Col. Edward Porter Alexander, his old roommate and classmate at West Point.
