Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1853, Seminole war,
recruitment duty, instructor at West Point, coastal survey duty, service in
Kansas-Missouri border conflict.
War Service: May 1861 Capt. in 5th US Artillery, chief of artillery in
2nd Divn/Army of the Ohio, Shiloh, advance on Corinth, Richmond KY,
September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 33rd
Bde/10th Divn/I corps at Perryville (k).
Post War: He led his green troops into their first combat action at the Battle of Perryville. Around 4:00 PM, a Confederate artillery shell exploded near Terrill, driving a piece of shrapnel into his upper chest and ripping through his left lung. Taken to the rear, he died that night.
