wars, Mexican war, fought Indians, involved in the San Juan Is affair, commanded
Dept of the West in St Louis
War Service: 1861 Brig. Gen. in Regular Army (since 1858), reached agreement
with Sterling Price not to interfere with Missouri State Guard, suspected of Southern
sympathies, May 1861 relieved of command, retired 1863.
Post War: President Andrew Johnson appointed Harney to the Indian Peace Commission in 1865 and 1867 to negotiate treaties.
