War Service: September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, service in Kentucky, post commander at Gallatin TN, commanded 1st Bde/3rd Divn/XX Corps in Atlanta campaign, Resaca (twice wounded), Peachtree Creek, commanded 3rd Divn/XX Corps in March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign.
